The Asia Cannabis Report projects that the continent’s medical cannabis market is likely to be worth well over $5 billion by 2024 if key markets such as Thailand continue their path to long-term expansion with reform and legislative change.

Long-held views in Asia have been shifting over the last few decades as trends indicate a return to traditional Ayurvedic medical practices that once flourished. Countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, India, and South Korea have all recently introduced legalised medical cannabis under government-licensed access and research programs and the result has seen both international and local operators keen to take a share of this valuable market.

There is still much work to be done, local industries will need to protect themselves from a monopolisation of the market, especially in light of the increased acceptance of cannabis across global, Western nations – something that has already been enshrined in Thailand’s new laws. Local markets will also need to ensure open and accessible medical cannabis programs are put into place, enabling fair and transparent business practices – both for home grown business as well as for pioneering foreign companies with their eyes on fresh, new spaces.
