Malta Enterprise on Medical Cannabis
In 2018 Malta released a landmark ruling on the production of cannabis for medicinal research. The Product of Cannabis for Medicinal and Research Purposes Act followed an earlier amendment of the Drug Dependence Act, which legalised the medicinal prescription of cannabis.
In March, 2018, Malta Enterprise approved 5 projects with a total investment of €30 million. The projects will create 185 new jobs. Three of the projects are Canadian while the others are Australian and Israeli.
In total Malta Enterprise has approved 10 applications for the production of medical cannabis, issuing letters of intent to the companies seeking approval from the Medicines Authority.
The Medicines Authority seeks to provide guidance and consultation on scientific matters, providing support to research and development and ensuring accessibility of quality medicinal grade cannabis.
The Authority also reviews any applications for the importation and wholesale distribution of cannabis based products for medicinal use. Activities related to the production of cannabis for medicinal and research purposes are regulated through comprehensive evaluation of scientific and technical documentation, security considerations, and good practices.
Applications for any operation related to production or research of medicinal cannabis are subject to a Letter of Intent from Malta Enterprise before assessment by the regulatory authority.
